Observation video game8/2/2023 ![]() Writing for videogames require more structure because there are more intermediaries between the game writer and the players (intermediaries that include the code!), and the vision behind each lore piece must not get lost. However, it is very possible to get a lot of constructive feedback from other game writers, from developers, and from friends. ![]() One won't get direct feedback from the players unless (or until) the content is implemented into a videogame and the game is released. Their goal is to add to the player's experience. Writing content in a videogame format implies that the NPCs, quests, and flavor texts have to comply to an existing universe and its lore. This means that the world and storyline (just like the game mechanics and systems) are iterative and co-created with the players.ĭuring the last year, I have been doing some amateur #gamewriting for videogames and mods, mostly writing NPCs and quests. ![]() The campaign for the players has a loose skeleton that was established with the MVP in 2019, but the quests contents are always evolving with new players, feedback, and emerging ideas. The volunteer TTRPG project requires a lot of worldbuilding, writing of NPCs and questlines, creation of lore elements, and the writing of a very adaptable (Agile!?) main storyline. I wrote this article because I love interactive narration, whether it is for tabletop role playing games (TTRPG) or for videogames, and I noticed that practicing writing in both formats helps greatly improving creativity and storytelling. ![]()
